אוואן סמוק היה בעברו מתנקש מטעם הממשל הידוע בכינויו "יתום x", שפעל מתחת לרדאר ונשלח למשימות המסוכנות בעולם. כעת הוא ירד למחתרת והמציא עצמו מחדש כ"איש משומקום" – אדם שיעשה הכול על מנת לעזור לנואשים ביותר שלא נותר להם איש לפנות אליו. כשאוואן מוצא עצמו ניצב לפתע מול חברו הטוב ביותר, כל הכללים הקשוחים שעל פיהם חי תמיד מתרסקים – וההשלכות קטלניות. טומי סטוג'אק הוא אולי חברו היחיד של אוואן בעולם. הוא נשָק מיומן שיצר עבור אוואן את רוב כלי הנשק שלו. אבל לאחר שחצה את כל הקווים האדומים של אוואן, העימות ביניהם מסלים במהירות לכדי מלחמה כוללת. לאוואן אין ברירה אלא להתייצב מול חברו. בינתיים טומי יוצא אל עיירה מרוחקת כדי לעזור לבנו של חבר ותיק שמת. אוואן מגיע לעיירה בחיפוש אחר נקמה, ושניהם מגלים שכוחות נוספים ומסוכנים מעורבים גם הם בפרשה. כשכל הקלפים על השולחן והכל מוכן לעימות המכריע, נותר רק לגלות האם מישהו מהם יצא משם בחיים.
